230 Live Music Performance

Brief:
Your school is hosting an awards ceremony for local community organisations. You have been asked to provide a 10-15 minute performance appropriate to the event.

TASK 1 Planning:
My statement of personal aims:

Through my contribution to the event I would like to achieve the following goals:
Me being a drummer i want to improve my ears for music in order to go along the lines of music technology carrier in later life, also i want to improve my skills being able to collaborate with other musicians to create good music.

I think that I have the following skills which I will use to help me achieve these goals:
I think i have great skills to help me contributing to this event such as time control, i know the right time to come in and the right time to add a fill and when to end the song. Also another thing i'm a creative drummer for example as we've been through loads of musical era and i like to mix genres together for better soundings.

I will know if I’ve achieved it because:
As we perform we will be recorded and we also will have a small audience to give feedback as well i can see what i need to improve and where i went wrong, with timing i know i have achieve my my goal if i play the whole through without feeling awkward a or confused if im laying at the right pace.

I will know if I have met the expectations of the audience because:
As we have been told the audience is members of the community so we have picked a variety of different genres of songs to play such as pop/hip hop for the young audience then for the older audience we have picked jazz/funk so it suitable for all types of audience.

Plan of my contribution to the performance:

The requirements of the brief:
In order to achieve the requirements i will perform 4 songs with the length of 10-15mins, in order to stay in this timezone we have to know when to switch and the time rate it takes. To do this we will time our performance, also we have to be able to follow the brief of performing a variety of music with different genres that are suitable.

What I intend to do:
For my live performance i intend to play drums with my group(Jenna, Bryony, Jake). We decided to put our two strongest song at the begin and end which was "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran and "Wonderwall" by Oasis. It follows the pattern of a slow song then up beat song to get the crowd going, then back to a slow song again.

How I will do it:
Ive asked my drum tutor for advice on the type of beats to play to all three of the songs and also done some independent research from youtube. Also i set up rehearsal at home 3 times a week each of the days i spent time one song trying to perfect them. There was couple times where we recorded as a whole but don't think it was enough. I came to the realisation looking at the recorded dress rehearsal so we continued to work on it and produced a good set piece.

I will need to involve:
Well we all started learning the songs solo then we later on came together and brought what we learnt and merged it all together to see if it works. we all play different rolls such as i play drums and jake plays base guitar and piano then jenna and bryony sing together.

I will need to following resources:
As a group we need access to equipment such as microphones, base guitar, piano, drums and a music room to insure we are able to rehearse as a group within lessons and out of lessons. also we need access to internet for secondary research and to upload the lyrics and chords for our live performance.

The time needed to each song/activity:
Our dress rehearsal was quite short due to the camera as it only managed to record 2 songs, but generally for each song we need about 3-4 mins including breaks from changing into different songs.

Health and Safety Issues:

The possible health and safety issues with the equipment we are using are that many if the electrical equipment is broken in the school and many wires may be breaking which can come very unsafe especially as we are not using our own equipment for most of it. Also many of the equipment is very heavy for example the amps way a tone and if one of them landed on you it could d0 some real damage. Another thing that you must be aware of when using the musical equipment is the leads as when using a lot of different equipment you have to connect them with lots of leads and sometimes these leads may become tangled. This could mean that someone could get caught in them or trip over them and hurt themselves. With the speakers and all the sound equipment you must looks out for how load they are on because if they are on too load you could burst someones ear drum. Finally with some many people in the room it could become a bit claustrophobic and also it could get a bit too full and some one may get hurt as the could fall over someone or ever fall into something trying to move around.

I can ensure that myself and others are safe during the rehearsal process by making sure that all the leads are tidy and i can use the most safe leads that are the most unbroken and use as few leads as i possibly can and also tidy them away so no one can trip over them. Also i am going to make sure that we use the biggest room we can as then it will not get full and there will be no chance that anyone will become claustrophobic or fall over anyone while in the room. Finally when carrying the heavy amps or instruments im going to make sure that the person is able to cary it and if not im going to make sure that more than one person is holding it and there is no possibility of anyone getting injured. If we are more safe when in our group it allows us to have a much more enjoyable experience as you do not have to worry about calling over or being in a small space you can just play music and enjoy yourself.

My set list:

  • Ed  Sheehan - Thinking out loud (performed by jenna, bryony, jake and owen)
  • TLC - No Scrubs (performed by jenna, bryony, jake and owen)
  • Oasis - Wonderwall (Performed by jenna, bryony, jake and owen)
Style and Image:

As we are preforming a variety of genres the clothing style should be casual wear of choice, but we will be required to wear our school uniforms. We have chosen pop/popular songs as the genre of our set list as all the songs should get everyone in the room moving, and lots of the audience should be familiar with the songs. This will ensure that the audience are entertained.

Ideas for the performance:
In order to make sure the whole thing runs smooth before preforming we will spend time practicing, also we have organised how we will individually enter the songs and also before starting we will have a sound check and once everything okay we will start the 10-15 piece.

Staging and equipment needs:
We will need a drumkit for in order for me to participate and microphones for Bryony and Jenna as they're the two singer in our group, lastly we will need a bass guitar and piano for Jake to play. The mic and instruments will be connected to a 6-channel amp so that we can be heard.

The drum kit should be the furthest away from the camera as its an acoustic im having to control the level of sound and the rest of the equipment can be anywhere on stage but as well as space from each other because the level of sound can be control as its electrical.

Rehearsal Schedule

Rehearsal 1: 4th January
We was told the brief today, we discussed each song we will preform will have a different genre that a crowd could sing along to, also we set ourself a task to complete before next lesson which was to think of 4 songs each and we will select our most liked songs together.

Rehearsal 2: 9th January
From our work in year 10 we look at our strongest songs that will fit our new brief, we came to the conclusion that "Wonderwall" by Oasis was a good fit. We split up the group in two for 40 mins so me and Jake learnt what we could and so did Jenna and Bryony did the same. For the last 20 mins we came together to incorporate what we learnt as a whole. Also i practiced by myself 3 times that same week.
Rehearsal 3: 16th January
Last week we worked on "Wonderwall" and we need to choose a song song from a genre/era, we chose "No Scrubs" by T.L.C we used the same strategy where we split up the group. With that time i done some secondary research using youtube and we played once through and decide to come back one lunchtime during the week. which also gave me the time to speak to my drum tutor for ideas.
Rehearsal 4: 23rd January
This week we mainly focused on "No Scrubs" as last week we was getting ideas and how to play to the song, We all split up leaving me and jake and practiced also i had been given few ideas from my drum tutor. we manage to go through the song 3 times no stop also played as a whole once towards the end.
Rehearsal 5: 30th January
So far we have 2 song, we need about 3/4 song to fit the 10-15 mins timezone so we decided on a song which was "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran. i found this song quite easy to learn myself because its a general song where that you can groove and jam to. Also as a group we closely analysed lyrics to see if the artist was trying to tell a story and see if we can put ourslef in his shoes and have the same passion to express the same feelings.

Rehearsal 6: 6th February
As a group we came to the conclusion that we are going to stick with the three songs which are Wonderwall, No scrubs, Thinking out loud which hopefully succeeding the 10-15 mins target, we was going to time ourself in this rehearsal, also we managed to go through the songs on loop.

DRESS REHEARSAL ON STAGE and rehearsal in practice room: 8th February (2 hours)

Rehearsal 8: After school / Lunch Time Rehearsal
I stayed back after school on thursday by myself for 40 mins going through all the three song trying to perfect them, also i worked on the fills that i'm introducing in wonderwall and thinking out loud. Also what i realized is when the beat switches or there's fills involved other musicians get more of the feel of the song.

Rehearsal 9: After school / Lunch Time Rehearsal
All together as a group we met up to go through our whole performance set. We set up quickly and knew that we needed to nail Thinking out loud this was because in our dress rehearsal we did not perform it to the best of our ability. So we all focused on that song and then after that we focused on the other songs.
PERFORMANCE: WEDNESDAY 22nd February

TASK 3 Evaluation

Strengths Reflection:

What went well during the performance:

Generally i think our best song was thinking out loud by Ed Sheeran, the timing and volume control was perfect. also i think towards the end the extended bit of wonderwall was very good and creative.

What I did well during the performance:

1. I think i done quite well controlling the volume of the drums as i was playing on an acooustic quite where its not controlled electrically like any other instrument.

2. Out 2/3 songs play i managed to put more then one fill and switches which i was quite pleased with.

Improvement Reflection:

What could have been done better if I were to perform again:

There was times where i came in too early which caused me to stop and start again, as a group i think we should have added our fourth song which was "i want you back" by Jackson 5.

Improvement #1: I need to come in at the right time
Strategy: I think as a whole group we need to practice the begin of the songs and ending because i felt like that was a weak point for me .

Improvement #2: Volume control throughout the volume the whole piece.
Strategy: I doubted myself thinking the beat i was palying to the the song at the time did not fit, which was reason for me starting off quite. Next time i will go with my instinces and improvice.

Improvement #3: We should if played "I want tou back" by Jackson 5
Strategy: We needed more rehearsal time together as a whole band before we preformed some songs, due to why we didnt play play the Jackson 5 song. I think if that was preformed it, it could have been our best song. If we had additional time to rehearse I would have definitely have liked to extend our setlist.

Feedback from others:

1. Quiet start song, be more confidient.
2. Make more eye contact with audience.
3. Work on my timing at the start of songs - I need to have in my head a starting tempo and not start too quickly or too slowly.

How this feedback helped with my evaluation of the performance:

I was so nervous that I didn't realise that I wasnt looking at the audience - generally because I think I was nervous but also I often looked away or closed my eyes so didnt mess up during the performance. If I had more confidence in myself and performing live with the band then I think I would have enjoyed the experience more and that would have come across in my communication with the audience. I think that the more experience I have playing live, the more professional I will look and the less nervous I will become.

Conclusion:

The  first song we played was "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran which went very well, then went on playing "no scrubs" by T.L.C which didnt go bad but wasnt the best. Lastly we played "Wonderwall" by Oasis the begining was quite rocky but towards the end where we extendend the song every sort of freestyled and it worked beautifully. I feel that I have achieved my goals and aims as I used this opportunity to perform and collaborate with other live musicians and this was reflected in what I feel was a good performance.
